Just wanted to write this about my experience last night dealing with drunk conservative family members.....
Last night at a very nice family function I made the mistake of getting into a conversation about politics. Now at this time the alcohol had been flowing rather freely, though things were pretty civil.
Everyone around me leans to the right, some heavily. The topic of 2016 candidates came up. Mind you I am not even a big fan of Hillary as I think she long sold out to whatever corporate interest is schmoozing up to her. But I also said that most of the Republican field seemed un-electable and that Hillary was more than likely going to take it.
Again -- everything seemed reasonable until my drunk aunt who knows little to nothing about politics, started calling the Clinton's some of the most despicable people ever.
Well, the Clinton's certainly are shady -- but I asked one question. What did the Clinton's do that was worse than the Iraq war?
My Aunt, the classy lady she is, immediately starts yelling that I'm brainwashed and almost looks at me like I'm from a different planet. Her son, my cousin, starts ranting about emails and how Hillary voted for the war (a horrendous decision on her part I believe) -- but it's funny how they're quick to pin the blame on a New York Senator rather than the people actually orchestrating the war... I digress.
Again I asked, what did the Clinton's do that was worse than Iraq?
And I continued to hear .... brainwashed.... commie..... "that was like 10 years ago" my Aunt said, which I found to be both hilarious and tragic.
Anyways, not sure why I'm writing this other than to share my frustration and to hear other people share their stories of arguing with their conservative family members.
My question was perhaps incendiary -- but I still never received an answer for it. And what I really didn't like was rather than trying to counter me with something substantive, they just fell back to name calling -- kind of felt like I was on Bill O'Reilly. My uncle, her husband, is one of the nicest guys in the world and I could see the horror on his face as his drunk wife called his nephew names and insults.
Anyways -- I'm over it but I am never, ever talking to her about anything of substance again. And politics at family functions are a terrible, terrible decision.
Hope you're all well!
