::Pours margaritas for everyone here at Top Comments tonight::
It's Cinco de Mayo! What does that mean other than we all drink tequila and eat tacos? Follow me below the orange burrito after a word from our sponsor...
Here at Top Comments we strive to nourish community by rounding up some of the site's best, funniest, most mojo'd & most informative commentary, and we depend on your help!! If you see a comment by another Kossack that deserves wider recognition, please send it either to topcomments at gmail or to the Top Comments group mailbox by 9:30pm Eastern. Please please please include a few words about why you sent it in as well as your user name (even if you think we know it already :-)), so we can credit you with the find!
Many Americans believe Cinco de Mayo is "Mexican Independence Day", much like our own Independence Day, Cuatro de Julio :-). However, this is not true; since 1825 Mexico's National Independence Day commemorating the Grito de Dolores (Cry of Dolores) has been September 16th.
Cinco de Mayo is actually a commemoration of the Mexican army's unlikely victory over the French forces of Napoleon III on May 5, 1862, at the Battle of Puebla. To make a long story short, Mexico had troubles paying back war debts to European countries and France came to Mexico to collect that debt. (I hear each and every one of you wondering which country is going to be the one showing up at OUR doorstep one day to collect the debt we owe....)
In Mexico the holiday is known as El Día de la Batalla de Puebla (Battle of Puebla Day) and while schools are closed, it isn't a particularly major holiday except in the region of Puebla... much like Patriot's Day here in the United States. Umm, you know... Lexington and Concord? Paul Revere? The day the Boston Marathon's run?
So, you ask, why do Americans celebrate Cinco de Mayo with such fervor? It's been celebrated in California since 1863, originally as a show of solidarity with Mexico against French rule. If I remember my history correctly, the French were supporting the Confederacy, so the show of support for Mexico also sent a message of Union support. In the mid-20th century it developed into show of pride in Mexican heritage, and after a 1989 Corona ad exhorting those celebrating Cinco de Mayo to drink Mexican beer, the whole thing took off as a party holiday.
Seems to have a lot in common with St. Patrick's Day after all:
immigrant heritage pride + beer = holiday celebrated here more than where its target population came from.
So did you have mole poblano and tequila tonite? Me, I was at K2's school music concert, where I listened to a variety of chorale and band/orchestral instrumental selections. Alas, tequila was NOT on the menu. Thanks to BeninSC for his always-appreciated collaboration today and any day!!
Brillig's ObDisclaimer: The decision to publish each nomination lies with the evening's Diarist and/or Comment Formatter. My evenings at the helm, I try reeeeallllyy hard to publish everything without regard to content. I really do, even when I disagree personally with any given nomination. "TopCommentness" lies in the eyes of the nominator and of you, the reader - I leave the decision to you. I do not publish self-nominations (ie your own comments) and if I ruled the world, we'd all build community, supporting and uplifting instead of tearing our fellow Kossacks down.

Holy Cow! A great comment on those non-Christian Christian fundies right in my Top Comments diary on the subject, by Ashes of Roses.

From Steven Payne:
This comment by Zumrum13 in my diary My husband and I are being sued is a cherry. Although I wouldn't go so far as taking away a weeks worth of tithing basket monies, laughing in a holier-than-thou face or two sure would feel sweet.
From Village Vet:
In an article by FaithGardner on the chlamydia outbreak in certain Texas schools, Soprano1 tells her own story, and that of her daughter, on why sex education for children is best started early (and for more reasons than STD's).
On my own diary about the Auburn, Nebr. woman who is suing "all gays" in Federal court (for a determination that being gay is a sin), Villanova Rhodes makes this terrific comment.
From yours truly, brillig:
From Jen Sorensen's Texas takeover cartoon we learn from angry marmot the truth about what Target really stands for.
